HBCU Directory

What is an HBCU? Well, an HBCU (which stands for Historically Black Colleges & Universities) is an accredited college or university established under the primary objective of educating Black Americans. In accordance to Higher Education Act of 1965, HBCUs are more specifically defined as:

“…any historically black college or university that was established prior to 1964, whose principal mission was, and is, the education of black Americans, and that is accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency or association determined by the Secretary [of Education]…”

Historically, African Americans had little to no assess to education at the college level. Therefore, the establishment of HBCUs in the early 1800s presented a groundbreaking opportunity for the African American community. The country’s first HBCUs provided learning opportunities at the primary and secondary levels, before primarily focusing on the college level. Presently, HBCUs continue to serve as a pillar of Black scholarship and play a vital role in Black educational culture.

Below, is a comprehensive list of the HBCUs around the country. The list is organized by state.
